2020 – A year like no other!
Is there anything ‘normal’?
Surprisingly there is!!
Christmas adverts are as always, a bit different… the rest of the year adverts sell us things – at Christmas they make us cry and hope for a chance to make a difference.
They hold out for us HOPE – that this season brings something different… it’s the same this year.
John Lewis gives us a film and for the first time they’ve used an original song, it’s sung by Celeste - a young black woman with an amazing voice, we hear her sing “of all the things I’d be I’d choose kindness…. wouldn’t it be wonderful if everyone gave a little love!”
And there is the heart of Christmas for me. Beautiful diverse voices holding out hope.
On that first Christmas it was a young woman, many angels, a tiny child, some Shepherds and the Magi – they promise exactly that – Hope.
God leaves heaven to become one of our kind, to show love to the world by stepping into our shoes.
Nothing, not even 2 metres separation and our rapidly changing 2020 rules can stop that.
The other day I heard Robbie Williams on the radio singing “can’t stop Christmas” he sings “people gonna need something to believe in” and as he says “you can’t take away our season”
It’s true. Every year Christmas is hard for some, it will be hard for more of us this year but the comfort and Joy that comes from knowing God’s love for us remains steadfast.
Because - as the words of one of my favourite Christmas stories… The Grinch who stole Christmas
“Maybe Christmas…doesn’t come from a store. Maybe Christmas… perhaps…means a little bit more.”
With that thought the Grinch’s heart grows bigger.
Love and Hope are born at Christmas.
So, this year as we remember the story of God’s love shown at that very first Christmas but offered every single day since then, for all of us, no matter where we are or who we are with (or not)
So, in this strangest of years….
let’s have big hearts and open minds for each other and for God who loves us.
