This well-known story is often referred to as the three kings – but Matthew, the only Gospel writer to record this event, just calls them “wise men from the east”, following a new star.
It is significant that the first two groups of visitors to the infant Jesus were NOT the great and noble of the land – but humble shepherds and foreigners from afar.
We do not know exactly where the three wise men were from, but it was probably far from Bethlehem – may be weeks or even months of travelling, on roads that were dangerous!
So THEY thought it was important to go – and WE must think carefully how we travel to Jesus and what will guide us.
