Latest news from the Parish of Goring by Sea. 1st July 2020.
Return to worship (but not as we know it!)
The government has advised that our church buildings can be opened for public worship from July 4th as long as this can be done safely. Thank you to all who have been praying about how the Lord would have us respond to this in the Parish of Goring by Sea. Fr. Keith and the Wardens met again on the 30th. June to pray and discuss further and this is what we believe is the way we should proceed:
Worship will begin again at St. Mary’s church on Sunday 12th July, but with significant restrictions, the main ones being: -
Regular hand washing and/or use of hand sanitiser
Social distancing (2 metres) which will restrict the numbers at any one service
Singing, chanting and playing of brass or woodwind instruments are not recommended, but a further
Cleaning of buildings after use.
In order to try and accommodate everybody who wants to attend worship there will be two opportunities to attend a service on Sundays. Both services will take place at St Mary’s Church as follows:
09.00 Said Eucharist. Book of Common Prayer.
11.00 Said Eucharist. Common Worship. (This service will also be live streamed via Facebook)
The church will open 15 minutes before each service. In order to maintain social distancing numbers are quite restricted (we have calculated approximately 30 people at present in St Mary’s) therefore you will need to register to attend prior to the service. You can do this by email to [email protected] or if you do not have e-mail by telephoning the Parish Office 01903 709163. You will receive confirmation that you are registered for the service. If a service reaches capacity we will send an e-mail to all on this mailing list. For tracking and tracing purposes the government guidance asks that we hold a register of names (for 21 days) of everyone who attends each service. Please do not just turn up for a service, as we may have to ask you to go home if we have reached capacity. Please think carefully about whether or not to attend if you are vulnerable or in an at risk group. If you are shielding you should not attend until the restriction is lifted, this is likely to be on the 1st. August. Please do not attend if you are unwell, particularly if you have Covid-19 symptoms. We will give any further information needed in next week’s newsletter.
The Eucharist on Sunday at 11.00 a.m. will be live streamed and Morning Prayer will still take place on Zoom on Thursday mornings. As from next week a new service Compline (Night Prayer) will be live streamed on Wednesday evenings at 8.00 pm. Evening prayer will no longer be streamed on Tuesday evenings.
Weddings, funerals and other life events ceremonies
These can now take place with no more than 30 people attending. Our first wedding since Lockdown will take place at St. Mary’s this Saturday 4th. July. (A double wedding!)
Roger Walker and Sylvia Jarrett will be married in St Mary's on Saturday 11th July. Sadly, because of Government regulations, only immediate family are able to attend. Roger and Sylvia will be holding a Celebration, to which everyone will be invited, when things return to normal.size: We wish them a very happy and blessed day, please hold them in your prayers’.
We will not yet be opening for personal prayer but hope to do so as soon as possible. Please see the request for help on the second page of this newsletter.

To maintain our services and hopefully open the church soon for personal prayer
We need more help urgently.
Services in church and opening for personal prayer can only take place if we have enough volunteers to clean and wipe down the church at the end of the every day or services. A few people have worked very hard to get the church ready for worship, but we need more help it would require about 1 hour of your time at any one session to clean and wipe down.
If you can help please e-mail the parish office [email protected] saying that you would like to help, and how often you would be able to help. (e.g. once/twice/more a week, once/twice/more a month, occasionally etc. and preference for which day(s) of the week).
Without your help we may not be able to open for personal prayer, continue or introduce any further services.
If you are well and fit enough please volunteer.
Please let Fr. Keith or the Wardens know if you have a personal pastoral concern or may know of somebody
God Bless, Gill, Janice, Ruth and Geoff.
