Church of England Diocese of Southwark St. John the Evangelist Caterham Valley

The Choir

St John’s has a long-standing choral tradition, with an RSCM-affiliated choir of adults and juniors, which is open to all but strives for a high standard of liturgical music, both traditional and modern.  The choir sings a different communion anthem at the 10am service each week and leads a congregational setting of the communion service – several different settings are used in rotation. On the last Sunday of the month the choir often sings a more elaborate Mass setting.  At the full Choral Evensong on the third Sunday of each month we are usually joined by additional singers from neighbouring church choirs.  The choir also sings at weddings and at services on the major Festivals such as Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Ascension Day, and there are regular special choral services such as the Advent carol service and the traditional Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols.

The adults practice on Friday evenings and the juniors on Sunday mornings after the 10am service.  St John’s has two holders of the RSCM Gold Award and has had many Bishop’s and Dean’s (previously Provost’s) Choristers over the years.  The choir has sung at many cathedrals and major churches including Guildford, Rochester, Chelmsford and Llandaff Cathedrals, Tewkesbury Abbey, Christchurch Priory and Malvern Priory. We are currently seeking a new Organist and Choir Director – please see the news page.
