DESCRIPTION:After the betrayal of Jesus by Judas Iscariot and his subseque
 nt suicide\, there was a gap in the group of Twelve Apostles.  The qualifi
 cation to become an apostle was to have been a follower of Christ from his
  Baptism to his Ascension\, and therefore a witness of the Resurrection\, 
 just like the other apostles.  The choice between Joseph Barsabas and Matt
 hias was made by the drawing of lots.  Very little is known about Matthias
 \; he is said to have preached in Judaea\, and later (far less likely) in 
 Cappadocia and near the Caspian Sea.  The Acts of Andrew and Matthias in t
 he City of the Cannibals is a romantic work of fiction in which Matthias i
 s rescued from being eaten.  His supposed relics were transferred from Jer
 usalem to Rome by Helena (mother of the Emperor Constantine) and then some
  of them were taken to Trèves in France in the 11th century.
