DESCRIPTION:Come and join us to celebrate St Gregory\, Pope\, Doctor of th
e Church and Apostle of the English (c. 540 - 604 AD). Gregory was set on
a monastic life at his own monastery of St Andrew's\, Rome\, but was ele
cted Pope during an outbreak of plague. He had a deep desire to evangelis
e the Anglo-Saxons\, having been impressed by some he had seen in the Rom
an slave market and released\, but had to delegate the mission to St Augu
stine\, whilst always directing it closely. His canon of writings was vas
t\, ranging from homilies on the Gospels to pastoral care and the lives of
the saints\, and his role in the development of the Roman liturgy was for
midable. He had an important part in the codification and adaptation of a
t least four pre-existing forms of plainchant. His influence on medieval
monasticism was profound. We give thanks for his remarkable life and witn
 ess.
