During the first wave of coronavirus in London approximately 4200 rough sleepers were housed in temporary accommodation, but many more remained unhoused. As we enter the second wave and furlough ends, more people are set to lose their jobs and homes.
Last winter we ran a night shelter in our church halls for the first time, under the umbrella of the Forest Churches Emergency Night Shelter group. COVID-19 restrictions on shared air space mean we are unable to run a night shelter in our church hall this year, however sadly the need for emergency accommodation for those experiencing homeless is still there and possibly greater than ever.
This winter we want to provide emergency accommodation via a hotel partnership established at the beginning of lockdown, by funding 15 individual bed spaces per night to run from November through to the end of March 2021. Each bed space will cost £25 per guest, per night, and will include meal service and caseworker support to help guests access longer term accommodation.
We’d love our support. We will be launching our crowdfund as part of the Aviva Community Fund in November, or you can get in touch with our treasurers at [email protected] to make a direct donation.
