 136\nGospel: Luke 4. 16 –24\n\nMany cultures preserve their beliefs and 
 values through oral tradition. No doubt the Israelites had their own tradi
 tion of stories and principles passed on by word of mouth\, but they also 
 had written scriptures\, which enshrined texts that could be handed down w
 ithout distortion to successive generations. The writer of Psalm 119 not o
 nly expresses his own thoughts and prayers\; he also refers back to an old
 er body of 'statutes' and 'precepts' that he loves\, values\, and wishes t
 o see put into action.\n\nIn the Gospel\, Jesus himself refers back to a w
 ritten scroll of Isaiah\, from which he reads the opening verses of chapte
 r 61\; these foretell the coming of the Messiah\, who will transform the w
 orld. In the verses following today's Gospel reading\, it becomes clear th
 at his listeners are not prepared to believe that Isaiah's prophecy refers
  to him - perhaps a warning to us all.
