DESCRIPTION:Family Communion for the 20th Sunday after Trinity. Celebrant
the Revd Adetola Badejo.\n\nFirst reading: Hebrews 4.12-16\nGospel: Mark 1
 0. 17-31\n\nToday's Gospel is the challenging story of Jesus and the rich
young man. The point of the story is not that wealth is inherently evil\,
but that it should never be more important than following Christ. The Gosp
el writers were master storytellers\, and good stories in the past were of
ten intentionally open-ended\, so that listeners could discuss what might
have happened next\; in this case\, we don't know\, apart from that the yo
ung man went away sad. Perhaps he reflected on what Christ had said\, real
ised that the mere possession of wealth didn't make him happy\, and at so
me future time came back. The story invites us to think how we might respo
nd\, and to consider what our personal obstacles might be.\n\nThe image is
a part of 'Christ and the Rich Young Ruler' by the late nineteenth-centur
y German painter Heinrich Hoffman. Hoffman excelled and specialised in pai
ntings of the life of Christ\; here\, he powerfully captures the point tha
t even as Jesus told the young man the painful truth he needed to hear\, h
 e loved him.
