DESCRIPTION:Family Communion for Epiphany 1 (The Baptism of Christ): celeb
rant the Revd Tola Badejo.\n\nFirst reading: Acts 8. 14–17\nGospel: Luke
  3. 15–17\, 21–22\n\nThe two readings today make a number of points ab
out baptism. One feature shared by both passages is the communal nature of
the action: in the reading from Acts the baptism is of an entire church i
n Samaria\, while Jesus went to be baptised by John along with many others
. The inclusion of Samaritans in the church\, moreover\, continues the the
me of inclusivity set out at Epiphany\, as Samaritans were considered outs
iders in mainstream Judaism.\n\nAs always\, the Bible narratives are compl
ex and multilayered. Christ's baptism is clearly a public event\, as refle
cted in the Poussin painting above\, but in must also have been a moment o
f special intimacy between Jesus and his cousin John\, as imagined in the
attached smaller painting by the same artist.
