 g tree.  While the meaning of the parable seems to be severe - the tree th
 at yields no fruit must be uprooted and destroyed - the severity is temper
 ed with mercy\; another year's grace is to be given. The tree is not the o
 nly character in the story: apart from the disappointed landowner\, there 
 is also the worker in the vineyard\, who intercedes on behalf of the tree\
 , and undertakes to try to make it bear fruit. In this parable\, each of u
 s is both tree and labourer\; responsible for our own fruitfulness\, but a
 lso responsible for nurturing others - the question begging to be asked is
  why the labourer hasn't tried to encourage the tree already.
