DESCRIPTION:Family Communion for the fifteenth Sunday after Trinity: celeb
rant the Revd Cynthia Finnerty\n\nFirst reading: 1 Timothy 6. 6–19\nGosp
el: Luke 16. 19–31\n\nBoth of today's readings focus on our duty to use
wealth constructively. The Gospel story of the rich man and Lazarus is not
a condemnation of prosperity in itself\, but of selfishness: the key poin
t of the painting above by Barent Fabritius is not only the contrast of we
alth between to two but also the indifference and hostility with which the
poor man is treated.\n\nThe story of Lazarus uses the heightened extremes
characteristic of Jesus's parables. The rich man is unimaginably wealthy\
; Lazarus as deprived as it's possible for a human being to be. Jesus's me
ssage\, however\, is not just for the ultra-rich\, or for those we see as
better off than ourselves\; the call to be responsible and generous with o
ur material blessings extends to us all.
