 don Marathon.\n\nIn our Gospel reading Jesus alikens himself to not only a
  shepherd\, but also the gate through which sheep can exit a pen. Through 
 Jesus and by Jesus\, we are led to true freedom and pasture. In our readin
 g from Acts we see a snapshot of the early church\, the first believers wh
 o were baptised by the apostles after Pentecost.\n\nLike the sheep in Jesu
 s' parable that follow the shepherd because they know his voice\, the earl
 y christians recognised the truth in the apostles' teachings\, and heard t
 he call of Jesus. A shepherd does not have a single sheep\, but a flock. I
 n Acts 2 we read about the importance of the communal life and fellowship 
 of the body of believers. \n\nOur reading from Acts ends with the line "An
 d the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved." And Je
 sus outlines in John 10 the means of this salvation - through him.
