DESCRIPTION:Today we hear the gospel story of the Transfiguration\, a biza
rre religious experience for Saints Peter\, James & John\, who\, at the to
p of a mountain\, see Jesus standing alongside Moses and Elijah. And yet w
hen they come down\, excited\, exhausted and full of faith\, they set abou
t healing a sick boy\, and they fail and the whole thing falls apart.\n\nS
ometimes we look back on distant religious\, or just very touching\, momen
ts and we wonder if it was\, in fact\, real...or was it just that I was ve
ry sensitive that day\, or I was particularly tired\, or maybe I simply ov
er-egged the whole thing....or dreamt it. I am sure that is how Peter\, Ja
mes and John must have felt. The vision is gone and life was back to its u
ntidy and unspectacular normal. An amazing experience on one hand\, and on
the other all the mess\, the ambiguity and perhaps disappointments of eve
ry day.\n\nBut when you hold these two things in your hand…\, you are st
aring at the very heart of our faith\, the very core of what it means to b
e a Christian. Because in Jesus Christ\, the Word was made flesh\, God spo
ke directly to human beings\, he walked among us\, ….and the world was c
hanged as a result. Religious experiences did break through into human dai
ly life\, and they were made real and meaningful and incarnate\, and peopl
e's lives were changed.\n\nOur job as Christians is to re-live\, and recre
ate\, that incarnation\, … now\, in our world of today. It is to be the
connection between those apparently disconnected things\, to be the voice
of that religious experience\,.. but here in our everyday lives. It is to
show how those such special moments can find real meaning\, not in some fl
uffy other-world\, but here\, incarnate\, in this one.\n\nThe picture show
