DESCRIPTION:Óscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdámez (15 August 1917 – 24 March
1980) was a prelate of the Catholic Church in El Salvador. He served as A
uxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of San Salvador\, Bishop of Santiago de
María\, and finally as the fourth Archbishop of San Salvador. \n\nRomero
spoke out against social injustice and violence amid the escalating confl
ict between the military government and left-wing insurgents that led to t
he Salvadoran Civil War. For many people\, his power came from the fact th
at he criticised both sides of the Salvadoran conflict. Instead of being p
artisan\, biased\, ideological\, he looked at the facts\, and he looked at
the pain and the suffering of his people\,… and he looked at what God
’s kingdom expected of him: "The law of God which says thou shalt not ki
ll\, must come before any human order to kill… It is high time”\, he s
aid\, “that you recover your conscience."\n\nAs Archbishop\, he sacrific
ed his own safety to be "close to the poor & his people"\, as the US-backe
d Salvadoran army employed death squads and torture to stop leftist revolu
tionaries from seizing power. He was eventually killed by soldiers while c
elebrating a funeral Mass in a hospital chapel in March 1980. Though no on
e was ever convicted for the crime\, investigations by the UN-created Trut
h Commission for El Salvador concluded that Major Roberto D'Aubuisson\, a
death squad leader and later founder of the right-wing Nationalist Republi
can Alliance (ARENA) political party\, had ordered the killing.\n\nIn 1997
\, Pope John Paul II bestowed upon Romero the title of Servant of God and
he was declared a martyr by Pope Francis on 3 February 2015\, paving the w
 ay for his beatification on 23 May 2015. During Romero's beatification\, P
ope Francis declared that his "ministry was distinguished by his particula
r attention to the most poor and marginalised." Pope Francis made him a sa
int on 14 October 2018.\n\nIn 2010\, the United Nations General Assembly p
roclaimed 24 March\, the day of his death\, as the "International Day for
the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for th
e Dignity of Victims". \n\nLatin American church groups often proclaim Rom
ero an unofficial patron saint of the Americas and El Salvador\; Catholics
in El Salvador often refer to him as San Romero\, as well as Monseñor Ro
mero. He is also one of the ten 20th-century martyrs depicted in statues a
bove the Great West Door of Westminster Abbey in London.\n\nPicture above
