DESCRIPTION:St David was a bishop in South-West Wales during the 6th centu
ry and became the patron saint of Wales. He is traditionally believed to b
e the grandson of Ceredig ap Cunedda\, king of that part of Wales.\n\nHe i
s renowned as a teacher and preacher\, founding monasteries and churches i
n Wales\, Devon and Brittany. He is said to have played a role in spreadin
g Christianity on the continent as well as the UK\, inspiring numerous pla
ce names in Brittany.\n\nAround the year 550\, he attended the Synod of Br
efi\, where he was outspoken in opposing the Pelagian heresy. As a result\
, his fellow monks elected him primate of the region. His best-known mirac
le is said to have taken place when he was preaching in the middle of a la
rge crowd at the Synod of Brefi\, when the ground on which he stood is rep
uted to have risen up to form a small hill. Historian\, John Davies\, note
d that one can scarcely "conceive of any miracle more superfluous" in a hi
lly country like Wales!\n\nSt David’s remains are housed in the Cathedra
l of St Davids in Pembrokeshire in South Wales. The Cathedral stands on th
e site of a monastery founded by St David. The town of St Davids in is sai
d to be the smallest cathedral city in the UK.\n\nPlease note: Today's ser
vice will be followed by the Annual Congregational Meeting.
