DESCRIPTION:The film tells the story of William Carey\, a Leicestershire c
 obbler\, who in 1793 set sail for India with his young family to take the 
 Gospel to the people of Bengal. By his death in 1834\, he had translated t
 he whole Bible into Bengali and Sanskrit and (in part) into 29 other langu
 ages\, compiled dictionaries and grammars\, and campaigned successfully fo
 r the practice of sati (in which a widow would be burnt alive on her dead 
 husband's funeral pyre) to be abolished. He was plagued with official oppo
 sition\, poor health and family tragedies yet never wavered in his mission
 ary endeavour. He is still celebrated in India for his Bible translations\
 , social reform\, horticultural research\, founding of Serampore College\,
  the abolition of sati and has been highly revered by generations of Benga
