Woodford Valley Churches Zoom Talk 14th May @ 6pm

CAPTAIN COOK’S FIRST VOYAGE
&
JOSEPH BANKS’ BOTANICAL DISCOVERIES

Joe Studholme will give a talk on the making of Bank’s Florilegium, the engravings of the plants collected by Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander on Captain Cook’s first voyage round the world in HMS Endeavour, 1768-1771.

Joe’s talk will describe Cook’s voyage and Banks’ preparations for the publication of his Florilegium in the eighteenth century and how it came about that the 743 exquisite copper plate line engravings he commissioned, all of plants new to European botany, were first printed and published over two hundred years later in the 1980s.

It is a fascinating tale that will interest the historian, excite the art lover and intrigue the gardener.

Joe is a co-founder of Editions Alecto who published Banks’ Florilegium in association with the British Museum (Natural History).
