The parish of Clare with Poslingford is unique in the Archdeaconry of Sudbury in having available for worship a chapel of ease as well as its main church, St Peter and St. Paul. St. Mary Poslingford, could perhaps thus be seen as Clare’s place in the country, and at in Springtime St. Mary’s church is a very attractive spot.
However, St. Marys as well as being a pretty church also has its needs, and the reason why it was designated a chapel of ease back in the early 2000s was because it no longer had a sufficiently large and active congregation to keep it running. The 2015 Quinquennial Inspection raised some issues relating to the building’s fabric, and while this is generally in good repair some areas do require urgent attention, particularly the windows to the bell ringing chamber which is set high in the tower. It is proposed that some works are undertaken over the coming year and plans for these are being prepared.
Most months will see a service held at St. Marys in the celebration of Evening Prayer or Holy Communion, while there is also the popular Carol Service and Compline on Good Friday. Thus through regular worship does the church continue to make Christ known in this small village that has lost all other amenities. It would be great that this presence continues.
A lovely, simple village church with a Norman south door and a 15th century rood screen. The font is of particular interest. The church lies in the centre of this small village just outside Clare.
A service is held mainly on the first Sunday of each month at 4.00pm
