The Maundy Thursday Agape Meal at St. Mary’s Church, Thornbury, is a reflective and communal service that commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus with His disciples. The meal includes the sharing of simple food—such as bread, wine, and fruit—symbolizing Christ's love and fellowship. The service typically features scripture readings, including the washing of the disciples' feet, and prayers of thanksgiving and intercession. The evening culminates with the stripping of the altar, symbolizing the desolation leading to Good Friday. This intimate, participatory service emphasizes humility, love, and community as the congregation prepares for the solemn events of Easter.

Safeguarding

All involved in the Benefice of Thornbury, Oldbury and Shepperdine strive to create and maintain safe environments for all that promote well-being, prevent abuse, and create nurturing, caring conditions. We follow the House of Bishops’ guidance and policies and appoint Parish Safeguarding Officers (PSO).

The PSO for Thornbury is Chris Verey - Tel 01454446638
The PSO for Oldbury & Shepperdine is Meg Adnams, who Chris Verey will shortly replace.

The PSO works closely with the Diocesan Safeguarding Adviser (DSA), who can be contacted via https://www.gloucester.anglican.org/about-us/safeguarding where you will find a list of diocesan contacts. A list of local authorities and volunteer agencies who can help is posted in each church.
