Discover the dramatic Mercian story behind the Battle of Tettenhall (910), Lady Æthelflæd and two of Shropshire’s most fascinating historic towns. This illustrated talk explores how the crushing defeat of a Viking raiding army in 910 helped secure Mercia and laid the path for the English reconquest of the Danelaw and a unified English monarchy. It also reveals Æthelflæd’s remarkable leadership as Lady of the Mercians: builder of fortified burhs such as Bridgnorth, strategist, patron (Much Wenlock) and powerbroker. Bridgnorth’s commanding position on the River Severn and Much Wenlock’s religious heritage show how local places were bound into a much larger national story of war, faith, identity and political survival. From Viking raids and battlefield uncertainty to royal patronage and frontier defence, the talk brings the so-called Dark Ages vividly to life and explains why these events matter to the history of the Shropshire, the Midlands and England.
