The Six @ St Pega Peakirk

Who are “The Six”?

You may have heard of “The Sixteen”, the professional choir founded and directed by Harry Christophers. Well, St Pega’s Church, unfortunately, does not have sufficient funds to be able to book them to perform a concert.

Instead, on Saturday 11 May, there will be a concert at St Pega’s entitled ‘Spring is in the Air’, to be performed by “The Six” (see poster above!). But who are “The Six”?

The idea for the concert was suggested when a member of Peakirk PCC heard one of “The Six” singing at one of our churches during the Organathon last year (and it wasn’t me singing Cwm Rhondda!).

All of the six performers have connections to the Nine Bridges Benefice Choir.

David Scoffield, the organist at St Pega’s, is our accompanist. David is also Director of The Glebe Singers and is involved other local musical societies. Marie Hayes, who also taught music, is the organist at St Benedict’s, and is the only lady in our group. She enjoys opera and is in fact Chair of Peterborough Opera.

Matthew Phillips, has performed with many choirs both in his native Australia and in the UK and is an accomplished solo performer. Adam Potts’ claim to fame is having sung with The Kings Singers(in a master class) as well as Peterborough Male Voice Choir and The Glebe Singers.

Simon Richards, a reader in the benefice, sang while at school and also at university. He is particularly fond of Sacred Choral music. Simon led the Benefice Singers for many years and currently supports the Benefice Choir as its diary secretary and music organiser. And finally, me, Derek Harris, also a reader. My love of performing started at Junior School who I was given the lead role in the class production of Worzel Gummidge! As well as the Benefice Choir and Glebe Singers I have performed with the Westwood Musical Society and frequently with my one man shows about the history of Britain’s canals.

So, we are “The Six” and an evening of first - class entertainment, along with refreshments is in store for you at St Pega’s Church at 7.30pm on Saturday 11 May. Why not come along and enjoy the evening while also helping to support St Pega’s Church? See you there!
