As the daylight fades on the first day of Advent, do join us as we look forward to the coming of Christ in a service which offers hope at the darkest time of the year.

Advent Sunday starts a new year in the Church’s calendar, and everyone is welcome to attend this uplifting act of worship.

No tickets are required for this service

Hereford Cathedral Choir will be singing in at The Guards' Chapel, London on Tuesday 1 December 2026 in a service to mark the beginning of Advent.

Since 2010, Hereford Cathedral Perpetual Trust has arranged an annual Advent Service in London at the Royal Military Chapel (Guards’ Chapel) at Wellington Barracks. The service opens with an Act of Remembrance of the members of the Special Air Service who have been killed in the course of their duties since the Second World War. The service then continues a sequence of Bible readings and Advent carols which point towards the coming of Jesus at Christmas.

Initially developed to celebrate the links that Hereford Cathedral has with local military groups, the service has now become a way for supporters of the cathedral, who work or live in London, to hear Hereford Cathedral Choir close to Christmas and to join in an act of Advent worship. The evening also serves as a fundraiser for the Perpetual Trust, which supports the choir and educational outreach, as well as the long-term sustainability of Hereford Cathedral’s worship, ministry and mission.

If you would like any additional information about becoming a Guards’ Chapel Patron, please contact [email protected] or call 01432 374 261.

As part of the Christmas season, join us for Christmas Sparkle, an organ concert performed by Peter Dyke, featuring a selection of festive favourites for Advent and Christmas.

Admission is free and no pre-booking is required. There will be a retiring collection at the end of the concert.

All proceeds from donations will go to Hereford Cathedral Perpetual Trust and their work supporting the cathedral and its music, including the great Father Willis organ.

We will start with a Nativity Family Trail on Friday 11 December 2026 until Monday 11 January 2027, families can take part in our Nativity Trail across the cathedral to discover more about the story of Christmas.

Pick up a free leaflet from the Welcome Desk as you arrive and follow the trail around the cathedral to find the different parts of the nativity story. Answer the questions as you go around, take the highlighted letters from your answers and you will be able make a festive word at the end of the trail!

Once you’ve found the answer, take your sheet to the Welcome Desk or Ticket Desk to claim your sticker!

We'd love to see pictures of you taking part in this year's trail - please feel free to tag us on social media!

The trail will take approximately 30 minutes to complete and is suitable for KS1 & KS2 (and their grown ups!). The trail will not be available to take part in when worship is taking place.

Bring your little ones to a special Carol Service just for toddlers and their families in the Cathedral nave. Enjoy a delightful Nativity with storytelling, drama, and beautiful Christmas songs.

Dress up as your favourite Nativity character - a sheep, a star, Joseph, Mary, an angel or even a donkey!

This event is free to attend, but donations are welcome. Please note that children must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times. The Hereford Cathedral Toddlers' Carol Service will take place in the Cathedral nave with refreshments following the service.
