Annual pilgrimage to the grave of St John Kemble. Our friends at St Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Monmouth organise a pilgrimage each year from Monmouth to St Mary's Welsh Newton. The pilgrims set off at 10.15am from St Mary's in Monmouth and get to St Mary's Welsh Newton at around 3pm where they gather for rosary, readings and prayers in the churchyard. They then travel back to Monmouth for benediction followed by tea at St Mary's in Monmouth. If you are joining the walk, please bring a packed lunch. For enquiries, please contact Mrs M. St Mary’s Welsh Newton

Welcome to St Mary the Virgin, Welsh Newton – a peaceful, rural church with a fascinating history and a vibrant present.

The church is open 24/7 for private prayer, and every Sunday we have either a service or a Christian meditation where you are very welcome, whether you’re a regular churchgoer or have never been to church before. St Mary the Virgin is a 13th century church which belonged to the Knights Templar until 1312. Look out for the unusual stone rood screen, the sanctuary seat, Norman font, the medieval preaching cross and the grave of St John Kemble, a Roman Catholic martyr put to death in 1679.
