About Us

St Mary's in Litton is one of six churches which is (soon to become) part of the 'East Mendip Hills' Benefice.

Each month, Litton holds two Holy Communion services, which are open to all.

St Mary's Church is Grade 1 listed. It is a small and pretty church, tucked into a quiet corner of the village. There is a small dedicated children's space with toys, a working organ, a clock tower and bell chamber. The churchyard is currently open with sufficient space.

Fabric/Repairs:

The fabric is in very good order as many repairs have been carried out internally and externally since 1980. External work carried out includes stonework repairs, re-slating of the roof over the north aisle and chancel and re-leading of the tower roof.

The organ was replaced at the end of 2003 by an organ from elsewhere and Bishop Jim Thompson dedicated a window commemorating the millennium in 2002.

A new boiler was installed in 2018 and in 2019 significant work was undertaken on the roof of the nave.

The church clock has been refurbished and the face re-guilded.

History:

The Anglican Church of St Mary dates from the 13th century. It has a Perpendicular tower with a bell chamber. It is a Grade I listed building. Several of the memorials and crosses in the churchyard are also listed buildings.
