It commemorates the crowds waving palm branches and laying cloaks to welcome him as he rode into Jerusalem on a donkey. The combination of Foot Washing (the Mandatum from which we get Maundy) and Eucharist is a central feature of Christian worship, particularly on Maundy Thursday, which commemorates the Last Supper. This ritual acts as a, visual and experiential, act, modelling Christ's command of humility and service.
