Following on from last week’s sermon: “Jesus said to them, ‘Come and have breakfast.’”
After a long and fruitless night, the disciples meet the risen Jesus on the shore. They are tired, uncertain and not even sure at first who is calling to them. Yet it is there, in that ordinary moment, that Jesus reveals himself—guiding them, providing for them and then gently inviting them to sit and share a meal with him.
It is a deeply comforting picture. The risen Lord does not stand at a distance, but comes close, meeting his friends in their everyday lives and welcoming them with simple food and quiet companionship.
This speaks to us as a church family today. We too meet the risen Lord not only in special or dramatic moments, but in the midst of ordinary life—in our homes, our work, our worries and our hopes. And we meet him in a particular way in the Eucharist, where he invites us again to his table. Whether we gather together in church or receive communion at home, the same invitation is given: “Come and share.” In bread and wine, Christ makes himself known to us. He meets us as we are, nourishes us with his presence and draws us into fellowship with him and with one another.
Like the disciples, we are also invited to bring what we have—our lives, our efforts, our faith, however small—and place them in his hands. And there, we find that he has already prepared what we truly need. As we receive the Eucharist, may we recognise the risen Lord among us, welcoming us, feeding us and sending us out renewed in his love.
