It's a day for people to come together to pray for seafarers and fishers who live and work at sea and thank them for the vital role they play in all of our lives. We are delighted to welcome Pastor George Ayoma as our preacher and several dignitaries from Fleetwood and Wyre. Be with Seafarers, Lord, on all their voyages, to cheer them and keep them safe in all dangers. Let nothing afloat or on shore cut them off from you. May they please you in everything they do. Bless all on board their ship, whatever their responsibility. Enable everyone to do their duty. Help them to be good shipmates and bring them back again safely to their homes and to those who long for their return, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen This Friday: Some of us from St Nic’s will be joining the coach loads from Blackburn Diocese travelling to York Minster for the consecration of Rev Dr Joe Kennedy as Bishop of Burnley. Joe is a priest with broad experience of both chaplaincy and teaching, as well as in the ministering and leading of others to help God’s church to grow. Please do remember Joe and his family in your prayers as they begin this new chapter in their lives and in the life of the Diocese. Almighty God, the light of the faithful and shepherd of souls, who set your servant Joe to be a bishop in the Church, to feed your sheep by the word of Christ and to guide them by good example: give us grace to keep the faith of the Church and to follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen Please remember in your prayers: Jeff Chambers, Katie, Louise Clark, Mark Price, Debbie, Michael Carthy, Rev Jane Everett, Paul Sumner, Sandra Pratt, Tom, Michael, John McLellan, June Larkin and David Richardson. Please also remember the families and friends of Paul Mellor whose funeral is due to take place.

Yes, on this very day in 1954 Gerald and Elsie Mathias made their wedding vows before God and to each other in St Peter’s Church Fleetwood. They have been part of the family of St Nic’s for all of their married life and in the younger days worked hard in the service of the church. We wish them great celebrations and heartfelt congratulations. UK’s 58 Prime Minister: Sir Keir Starmer’s campaign can be summarised in a single word: change. The electorate wanted to punish the Conservative party and they have done so. How should we respond to all this? In all things, we should be driven by love of God and neighbour.First, we should be grateful that we live in a democracy and have the power to elect and depose our political rulers. This privilege to choose carries with it significant responsibility (Genesis 2:17). Less than half of the world’s population lives in a democracy of some kind. Secondly, we should pray for our newly elected political leaders and for those who have lost power (1 Timothy 2:1–4). Politics is a noble profession and a lofty calling. We should pray that our new government and opposition parties put the interests of the country ahead of their own and act in ways that restrain evil and promote what is good. Thirdly, we should work for the flourishing of all by helping rebuild our democratic institutions (Isaiah 61:4) through prayer and service in our daily lives. The level of political engagement in the UK is at an all-time low, and a majority of people – across democratic societies – do not believe their governments are working in the public’s interests. Democracy isn’t just about voting; it’s about active participation in civic life and working towards the common good. 100 Club Winners in June: Margaret Pook, Muriel Freestone, Michael Newton, Stephen Ward, Elsie Mathias, Beryl Clarkson, Moira Greenwood, Christopher Ashworth, Chris Jones, Cath Chambers, Margaret Forshaw, Margaret Kershaw, Alma Wright, Dorothy Greene and Ann Turner. A 2021 survey asked what characteristics in leaders mattered most to the UK public. Overwhelmingly, respondents said they wanted politicians with integrity, and leaders who operate within the rules. The word ‘integrity’ literally means ‘intact’, or a state of wholeness. Integrity means behaving the same, irrespective of who is watching and even when no-one is! The Gospels point to Jesus as the perfect model of integrity, whose actions always match his words, who does not prefer the powerful to the powerless. God asks us to resist power-grasping instincts and instead ‘do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit’. We’re to look to ‘the interests of others’ to reflect Jesus, who was ‘in very nature God’ and yet ‘he made himself nothing...’ (Philippians 2:3–8). In Jesus we have the ultimate model, and, through his Spirit, the power to be transformed. As the election approaches this Thursday, we can value and demand integrity in the public servants we give our careful vote. We can pray for those standing for public office and working in government. And, in our own everyday contexts, let’s consider how we too might choose to resist selfish ambition to serve others with integrity. Please remember in your prayers: Jeff Chambers, Katie, Louise Clark, Mark Price, Dean, Debbie, Michael Carthy, Rev Jane Everett, Paul Sumner, Sandra Pratt, Tom, Michael, John McLellan, June Larkin and David Richardson. Please also remember the families and friends of Ian Robinson, Kathleen Unwin and Margaret Rigby, whose funerals are due to take place.

Brian House Coffee Morning Wow! Massive thanks to Dorothy, Jillian and Carole who hosted our special coffee morning on the 14th and provided the delicious homemade fayre. With your support we raised and amazing £217 for the children’s hospice. Thank you to all who attended and gave so generously. Sea Shanty Evening Another first for St Nic’s and what a fabulous night! Well done and massive thanks to Alan Newton and our fabulous events team, Joanne, David and Karen for all the preparation and planning that happened before the event and on the night itself. The band was excellent. One hundred and twenty portions of fish and chips from Shakies, served hot and delicious. Lots of new faces joined us from the around the town. And it’s looking like, after expenses, we raised approximately £1500 to kick start our ‘Tower Fund’. Great fun and thank you to all those who supported it in any way. Tower Fund We have been working hard behind the scenes on our next phase of restoring St Nic’s. This now involves replacing some of the most worn bricks in the tower, substantial re-pointing and the insertion of some new cavity trays to redirect any water ingress. From Monday we enter into a 30-day public consultation period and assuming no objections are received we can move to the final phase of approval for the work to proceed in principle. The cost at the moment is in the region of £120,000 and we are going to need significant assistance in paying for this. In addition to making numerous grant applications, we will need to be imaginative in reaching out to the town to help us. With this in mind it would be good to form a small fund-raising team to direct our thinking. Is this something that you could help with? Are you knowledgeable in the area of social media and crowd funding? Please prayerfully consider it and then speak to the Vicar. Please remember in your prayers: Jeff Chambers, Katie, Louise Clark, Mark Price, Dean, Debbie, Michael Carthy, Rev Jane Everett, Paul Sumner, Sandra Pratt, Tom, Michael, John McLellan and David Goodman. Please also remember the families and friends of Jean Laithwaite-Bond, Ian Robinson, Kathleen Unwin and Margaret Rigby, whose funerals are due to take place.
