At St Aidan’s we have a set of images depicting Jesus’ journey to Calvary from the trial by Pilate to placing his body in the borrowed tomb. On Fridays in Lent we walk round these images or ‘stations’ and meditate on this journey, using short bible readings and prayers. A printed order of service is available. A different set of readings prayers and meditations will be used for a service on Good Friday which includes singing verses from suitable hymns.

Tuesday Prayers

We meet once a week to pray for the local community, individuals with their permission, regional, national and international concerns. The group is lead by a lay person using a simple structure. The prayers commence at noon with the Memorial of the Incarnation (the Angelus) and lasts 20 minutes. Prayer requests can be left in the basket on the table at the back of church.

Sung Eucharist

Holy Communion with meditation

A short celebration of Holy Communion without hymns, with a mediation on the previous Sunday’s Gospel reading. Takes place in St Oswald’s chapel to the right of the high altar.

Lent Study Group - Handel’s Messiah

We follow on from our Advent study group using the music and words of Handel’s oratorio Messiah to deepen our understanding of the crucifixion of Christ. We take a deep dive into the scriptures that inspired the libretto.

On this the most solemn day of the church’s year we follow Christ on his last journey to the Cross, walking (if able) or sitting and joining in short prayers interspersed with readings, meditations and hymns. We are encouraged to reflect on the meaning of Christ’s suffering and our response to it, while anticipating the mystery of the resurrection, two days later.
