Maundy Thursday Meal and Communion

All are warmly invited to gather for our Benefice Maundy Thursday Meal and Communion at St Mary’s at 6.30pm.

On this night, the meal and the service are one single act of worship. We will begin by sharing a simple meal together — lasagne (meat and vegetarian), salad, pittas, and wine (with non-alcoholic options available). As we eat, we will listen to scripture and sing together. Our evening will then continue naturally into Holy Communion, before we end with the stripping of the altars, remembering the night before Jesus’ crucifixion.

Because of the nature of Maundy Thursday, the meal is not separate from the service — it is part of the service itself. We therefore encourage everyone who comes to arrive for the beginning and share in the whole evening together.

To help us plan, a sign-up sheet is available at the back of church, though you are very welcome to come along on the night even if you haven’t signed up.

If you are able to cook or bring something to contribute, that would be wonderful. We would particularly welcome:
Lasagne (meat or vegetarian)
Salads
Pittas
Bottles of wine
All contributions will be joyfully received.

We want this to be a meal where everyone can take part, so if you have dietary needs or concerns about food, please do let us know and we will make sure there is something suitable for you: [email protected]

All are very welcome to share in this special evening together.

St James

UPDATE JUNE 2026: Our beautiful church has been closed for 12 months now, due to structural issues with both the spire and the lychgate. Whilst we have undertaken the necessary structural surveys, we now face the mammoth task of raising over £250,000. We are very grateful to Staveley CE Primary School who allow us to meet every Sunday in their hall for our regular 9.30am service.

At St. James' we are a church family of all ages who seek to grow in our faith and to draw others to the love of Jesus. In our worship we use a blend of hymns and worship songs, seasonal and all age services and encourage lay involvement.

We worship together at 0930 every Sunday. Please see our website and Facebook page for up to date information.
