Weddings

We are delighted that you are thinking of getting married in one of our historic churches.

Our churches have been the location for the people of Workington to pledge their love to one other for nearly 900 years. Using timeless words, carefully crafted and refined over generations, men and women have taken each other's hands and given themselves fully to the other, vowing to stand by one another whatever life may throw at them. Legal requirements and language have been poetically cushioned in a manner to create ceremonies that no secular venue can truly emulate. These are among the many reasons that the Church of England is the only institution in the United Kingdom trusted with arranging, hosting, and performing weddings of national significance.

If either you or your partner live within the parish boundaries of either St Michael's or St John's, you have the legal right to have your marriage ceremony, including registration, in either of our churches (subject to fees). You can check what parish you live in by visiting achurchnearyou.com.

If you do not live within our parish boundaries, you may still be able to have your marriage in either of our churches through a qualifying connection. A person has a qualifying connection with a parish if:

  • Either of you:
    • has at any time lived within the Church parish boundaries for a period of at least 6 months
    • was baptised in either St Michael's or St John's.
    • was prepared for confirmation at either St Michael's or St John's.
    • has at any time regularly gone to normal church services at St Michael's or St John's for a period of at least 6 months
  • One of your parents, at any time after you were born:
    • has lived in the parish of St Michael's for a period of at least 6 months
    • has regularly gone to normal church services at St Michael's for a period of at least 6 months
  • Your parents or grandparents:
    • were married in either St Michael's or St John's.
