On Sunday mornings in Lent progress through the readings and liturgy of the season. Our mood is a little more serious as we put away the more exuberant Glorias and Alleluias, and we make a little more of our penitential (sorrowful) sentences. This helps us to inhabit Lent more thoughtfully, still in a way that our children and families can fully participate.
Some of the Lent services have a special flavour. The fourth Sunday is Mothering Sunday which we celebrate with gifts of flowers. The sixth Sunday is Palm Sunday, the start of Holy Week, when we recall Jesus' kingly entry into Jerusalem on a donkey. At this service we will read the Passion Narrative with different voices in the congregation playing the parts - and there are some parts which we all say together.
As Easter nears, we follow the dramatic events of the Last Supper, Jesus' betrayal, trial and crucifixion on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. Even though we encounter these events from a great distance, this helps us to feel the joy of the Resurrection on Easter Morning!
