At St Mary's we hold a service of Tenebrae which means 'Shadows'to mark Jesus' death on the cross on Good Friday. Members of the church read a succession of readings telling the events of Jesus' arrest, trial and death. There are 15 candles lit before the beginning of the service. After each reading a candle is extinguished and the darkness gathers. Eventually only a single candle is left alight, the Easter light from the previous year. At the telling of Christ's death this also is extinguished. The service ends in silent waiting for the third hour.
