Bells and Bell-Ringing

There are six bells in the tower (D#, C#, B, A#, G#, F#). Three of them date from 1641, the eve of the Civil War, and bear the inscriptions "Feare God", "Love God", "Honour the Kinge". They may have been the gift of the Rector at the time, Christopher Wren, father of the famous architect. The other three date from the 1770s. Two were re-cast in 1925, in the presence of King George V and Queen Mary, at the Croydon foundry of Gillett and Johnston. All are still rung regularly, and the Tower Captain, John Hughes-D'Aeth, is always glad to hear from anyone who would like to join the team or to learn to ring ([email protected]).
