On the 18th January, St.David's church held a commemoration service honouring the RAF Pilots who sadly lost their lives in a tragic mid air collision over Wettenhall 50 years ago on the 19th January 1976. The service brought together the families of the two pilots - Flt Lt James Downey and Flt Lt John Roberts. The two families were also joined by the family of Flt Lt Andy Bloxam who saddley also tied in a tragic Harrier Jump Jet accident in 1974. The service marked 50 years since the sad loss of James and John and 52 years since the loss of Andy. We were also joined by representatives of the RAF in the form of the 146(Northwich) Squadron RAF Air Cadets Drum Band who opened the service with a march up the asile of the church whilst playing "When the Saints Go Marching In" before taking their place in the Chancel. We were also joined by the chair person of the War Widows Association, Chris Dziuba. The commemoratiom was beautifully lead by Ann Nicholas, our Lay Reader.
The service was followed by a sumptuous spread that allowed the congregation, families and the RAF to share their experiences, and bring the tribute to a fitting conclusion.
A sincere thanks to all who made this such a wonderful event, the RAF Air Cadets, the families of the three pilots, the chair of the War Widows association and of course all the St.David's team who worked so hard to make this a truly memorable event.
The families presented St.David's with a pair of beautiful candle sticks as a memento of the commemoration service.
For those of you who were unable to attend the service, a link to the recording of the event is attached.
