St David’s has been an Eco Church since 2020. We hold the Bronze Award and since 2024 we’ve been working on the Silver Award. This asks us to work together as a church family to be prayerfully aware of our use of our building, our land, our use of energy and water. More than that we have had to look at our lifestyle as Christians and ordinary people at work, at home and in everything we do that touches our environment. We’ve also linked up with other organisations and local groups in Winsford and beyond.
We recycle – all the usual ways and as a church collect pill sleeves, printer cartridges and hard to recycle beauty products. We have used our land, although we are a small village church, surrounded by the fields of the Cheshire Plain, firmly in “dairy country” we have only our churchyard. We’ve relaxed our mowing programme over the last few years and on a survey, found we had 26 species of wildflowers and grasses. Our graveyard is open and families tend the graves so well, but we find a way to keep all neat, but allow plants, flowers and our newts to thrive.
In June we completed work on a pond, planting the margins, as well as in the water. We created a pebble beach for creatures to get in and out of the water. We’ve also built a bug hotel. It’s work in progress, but the structure is there and over the summer, we hope there will be plenty of hiding places for wild bees and bugs of all kinds.
We pray and worship joyfully in our Green Café Worship. Instead of a sermon, we work on the projects both practical and thoughtful. As a church family everyone is involved, young and old, able or not so able. We enjoy the informality of our Green Cafes, but we have our focus firmly on God our Creator, the mother and father of all we have in our world.
The birds of the sky nest by the waters; they sing among its branches
He waters the mountains from his upper chambers, the land is satisfied by his work.
He makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants for him to cultivate-

Oh and did I mention the cakes? After all, it is Green Café Worship!
