"The Light Is Coming: Waiting with Purpose"
In many villages, December begins with joyful busyness—carol rehearsals, nativity plans, tree lightings, and Christmas preparations. And rightly so: these shared traditions bring light and warmth to our communities.
But in the church year, Advent calls us to a different rhythm. It invites us to pause—not only in the rush toward Christmas, but in a deeper, quieter way. Advent marks the beginning of the Church’s year, a season of watchfulness, reflection, and hope.
It isn’t about rushing or perfection. It’s about making room—for silence, for prayer, for kindness. Here in the countryside, we understand the rhythm of the seasons, the patience of growing, and the quiet that restores the soul. Advent speaks that same language. It reminds us that Christ comes not only in grand celebrations, but in stillness, in waiting, and in small acts of love.
At Holy Trinity, we mark this season by lighting the Advent wreath—one candle for each Sunday leading to Christmas. Each flame tells part of the story:
Hope – the Prophet’s Candle, reminding us to trust in God’s promises, even when we can’t yet see how they will unfold.
Peace – the Bethlehem Candle, calling us to seek calm hearts and right relationships in a troubled world.
Joy – the Shepherds’ Candle, celebrating the good news that comes first to the humble and overlooked.
Love – the Angel’s Candle, shining with a love that is strong, steady, and welcoming to all.
Each light grows brighter as Christmas draws near, reminding us that light always shines in the darkness—and the darkness cannot overcome it (John 1:5).
So, this Advent, may we slow down, listen deeply, and watch for the coming light.
