About Us

St. Edmund’s Chapel is all that remains of the “Chapel and Hospital of St. Edmund, Bishop and Confessor, and of the glorious Bishop Cuthbert”, which was founded between 1247 and 1249 by Nicholas de Farnham, Bishop of Durham, on the site of the earlier Hospital of the Holy Trinity.  This makes St Edmund's Chapel the oldest building in Gateshead.

We have eight stained glass windows in our church, depicting St Cuthbert (c634-687), The Venerable Bede (673-735), St Oswald (605-642), St Hilda (b 614), St Aidan (d 651), St Thomas (1118-1170), St Helen (c255-330) and St George (3rd or 4th century).
