Tenebrae begins by candlelight and ends in darkness. It is a stark contrast to the Easter Vigil, which begins in darkness and blazes into light as a symbol of Christ the risen light.
As a service that traditionally accompanies the last days of Holy Week, Tenebrae is a dark prelude to the light of Easter, a celebration of Christ's Passion in anticipation of his rising from the dead.
