Welcome to All Saints Church. The Parochial Church Council would like to bring to your attention one of the structural issues currently under consideration. The Chancel to the East end of the church was built in 1726 with a traditional timber roof structure of rafters and clay tiles and a brick parapet end wall capped with stone copings. A structural survey in 2014 indicated a problem with the Chancel walls being out of “plumb”. This was once again highlighted in the 2024 report but with a suggestion the roof structure may be imposing unsustainable outward weight. Following visits by the Church Buildings Advisor from Ely and an Architect, the conclusion is the decorative timber panelling and fretwork you can see, facing the Chancel, may be over heavy for the roof structure. Ultimately the fretwork may be removed to reduce weight and the installation of “tie bars” to stabilise the roof structure and the walls. It is thought the Fretwork may originally be Victorian but was not added to the All Saints Chancel roof until the early 1970s. Members of The Church Council are seeking any interior photographs of All Saints Church pre-1970 which might show the original timber structure of the Chancel, before the fretwork was installed.
