Churchyard Records

The following information has been transcribed from the Burial Book register which was compiled by the Rev R A Waterson in August 1989

Record of Burials in Falfield Churchyard from 1920 onwards.

The following record of Burials in St George’s Churchyard, Falfield has been drawn up from as existing grid-plan of the ‘New Burial Ground’, which had been drawn up on the back of an old Sunday School Poster (about 1920) and is now in a very dilapidated condition. The actual lay-out of the existing graves did not always correspond with the lay-out as drawn on the grid plan, as some rows contained more graves that others, and spaces were marked as the plan where such spaces do not exist. All these inconsistencies do give rise to confusion. Names omitted that appeared in the Burial Registers were sometimes omitted from the grid-plan, and a great deal of cross reference has been necessary (e.g. Mariage Registers, disposal certificates – where they exist!) in order to try to bring the record up to date.

With the help of Mrs Anne Riddiford, a local historian, and a former resident of Falfield, and with the aid of those who are old enough to remember some of the long – deceased, a great deal of useful information has been gleaned, enabling many of the gaps in the old record to be filled and some of the obscurities sorted out.

The said grid-plan is the old record we have of the whereabouts of burials that have taken place in the ‘New Burial Ground’ during the 1920 – 1989. The urgency of drawing up a new form of Burials record has now become apparent.

The burial of cremated remains are also included some being interred in an existing grave, others in a separate resting place, most of which are marked with a memorial tablet.

Where a headstone, curb or some other memorial exists the entry is marked ‘V’ Double Graves ‘D’, Single Graves ‘S’

The old, dilapidated record has been kept for reference inside the Burials Register in the Church safe[i].

Rows of graves are lettered from the West Wall adjoining the Vicarage Drive.

Individual graves are number from the North Wall adjoining the Vicarage Garden[ii].
