Medieval trio Ypotryll

Karen Jones, Rachel Tedd and Simon Pickard performed at St. Mary’s, Syde on Friday June 3rd a concert of medieval music in aid of the church Roof Fund. The concert lasted about an hour and was free with a retiring collection which raised £430.

The Trio played a number of very early instruments including psaltery, dulcimer, harp, vielle, cetra, recorder and clavicytherium. The Ypotryll is one of the more obscure medieval mythical creatures, and the repertoire the group performed was, if not mythical, certainly obscure. Much of the music of this time has not survived, and it is highly probable that improvisation was more significant than written notation. The music in the programme included pieces from the Galician Cantigas de Santa Maria, the Llibre Vermell de Montserrat, and also music with more local origins, written in the 13th century at Llanthony Secunda Priory. The trio's aim is to try to recreate the medieval sound-world and to engage and inform audiences by performing medieval music in medieval buildings.
