Reflection for the Season of Remembrance
We all know the rhyme ‘Remember, remember the fifth of November’ perhaps you still enjoy a good bonfire and fireworks. In my family tradition we add home - made treacle toffee, some years hard and brittle, a hammer needed to break it up! In other years a spoon is needed as it turns out runny and sticky, but always delicious and treacly.
There is a date on which to observe a Remembrance before the fifth, the annual Remembering Our Loved Ones service this year is to be held at Ruskington Church on November 2nd at 3 pm. This service is welcomed by people who have been bereaved, whether their loss is recent or of some time ago. Love remains, so to it is right to give thanks to God for love received and given and for the memory of times shared with those from whom we are separated by death. It is a healing and reassuring time for reflection and prayer.
This year Remembrance Sunday follows closely on November 9th when, gathered in church or around a War Memorial we give thanks to God for all who served in the two world wars and in recent conflicts. The reading of the names of those who lost their lives in the service of their country is especially poignant. Prayers for peace in our time and in our lives an important inclusion.
Remembrance is at the heart of the Gospel message, a central theme in Christian Worship. Jesus, during The Last Supper shared a meal and the bread and wine of The Passover with His disciples. Jesus used the words
‘Do this in Remembrance of me’ Thus instituting the Communion service where Christians give thanks for the love of God in all that Jesus has done for us through His death, resurrection and through the gift of His Holy Spirit.
As we receive the wafer and wine we offer our ‘souls and bodies’ to Jesus for His service. Remembering that Jesus is The Prince of Peace, pray for peace in the world and a personal willingness to receive peace from God and to seek to live peacefully with others in all aspects of our lives.
May God bless you. Rev Rosemary.
