The creation of a wild flower meadow begins!

Since the spring, Barrow upon Humber Parish Council, Holy Trinity Church and John Harrison CE Primary School have been working together on a joint project to create a wild flower meadow in the west area of the churchyard, between the footpath and the old vicarage wall.

The areas have been delineated by mowing, so that, in the growing season it is clear what is cut grass and what is meadow.

This autumn, after the first cut of the new meadow, work began. Initially the cut material was raked up and some native wild flowers were planted. John Harrison School gardening club have done an excellent job raking up dead leaves, scarifying the ground and sewing wildflower seeds, (including yellow rattle to reduce the vigour of the grasses), bulb planting and planting native species.

Thanks to The Parish Council for providing 100 native narcissus and crocus bulbs.

Bluebell bulbs have also been donated and many established native plants, e.g oxeye daisies, yarrow, bugle. The sowing of yellow rattle and planting of established native plants will continue, we expect the meadow will take several years to become established.

Further donations of wildflower seed, established native plants and native bulbs are very welcome.

Volunteers to work on the meadow for an hour from time to time (it’s not heavy work), are most welcome please contact Kate Hindson by text or email 07903 504 754 [email protected]
