This exhibition traces the long life of storytelling in the Middle East, beginning with pre‑Islamic legends such as Gilgamesh and Alexander the Great, whose adventures shaped the imaginative world from which later tales emerged. It follows the formation of The Thousand and One Nights as a collection, explores some of its best‑known stories alongside later “orphan tales” like Ali Baba and Aladdin, and shows how Western translators and Victorian publishers reshaped them for new audiences. The journey continues into the twentieth century, where theatre and cinema reinvented the tales yet again. Among the objects on display is an Afghan war carpet whose imagery echoes the magical flying carpets of legend, linking ancient storytelling with the realities of history.
