Opened in 1844, St Mary's in Knowsley Village has been a precious part of village lives for over 180 years. Baptisms, weddings and funerals bring people together in joy and in grief, with faith at the heart of the celebrations and memorials.
Our little church has so much history, built by the Stanley family for the estate workers. We have beautiful windows, with dedications and stories behind them, a wonderful and glorious mosaic depicting the nativity, and our latest rediscovery... a beautiful crypt.
The church was closed for two months while building works took place to make the church more accessible for everybody. We replaced the doors with electric automatic opening glass doors, we put ramps in so that everybody can access the Altar, replaced and improved the kitchen for improved hospitality, and replaced the central pews with chairs to allow for a central aisle and wheelchair access. We can also now have a central aisle for weddings and funerals.
The Derby family crypt was sealed with stone flags, and now has an opening hatch and lighting to light up the stone steps and let people see the beautiful stone work. The crypt is the final resting place of several of the Stanley family, including the 14th Earl Edward Smith-Stanley born in 1799, and died in 1869. He was Prime Minister three times!

-A fantastic "Heritage Day" Saturday... we went to St Mary's Knowsley Church in Knowsley Village and saw their fantastic completed project which we helped with.
We were delighted to see so many people, and hope to do it all again next year!
