St Mungo

St. Mungo’s is the mother church for what was known as the `the Great Parish of Simonburn’, at one time the largest parish in England. A beautiful 13th century church with remnants of older buildings going back to the 8th century. Founded by St. Mungo in the 6th century when he was chased out of Glasgow by a pagan king, he came and baptised in the stream that still runs past the church. We are a very rural community, one small village with surrounding farms and settlements and our older parishioners remember coming to church by pony or in a horse drawn cart.

A gem of a classic rural English church with an award winning tearoom across the village green.

The parish of Simonburn is committed to the safeguarding of children, young people and adults. We follow the House of Bishops guidance and policies and have our own Parish Safeguarding Officer(s), PSOs. The Diocese of Newcastle’s safeguarding pages contain vital links and information including contacts for the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisor (DSA) who advise our PSOs. If you are concerned that a child or adult has been harmed or may be at risk of harm please contact the DSA. If you have immediate concerns about the safety of someone, please contact the police and your local authority Children or Adults Services.
