About Us
St John the Baptist Church, Edlingham……..a place of peace.
Welcome to this holy and ancient site which is known to have been a place of worship since the 8th Century. A small Saxon Church built on the site of an old 8th Century church. Initially a wooden building in 840AD to the stone building you see today.
The Village of Edlingham was gifted to St Cuthbert from King Ceolwulf of Northumbria in the 8th Century. The site and Church have hundreds of years of stories to tell. The on-going involvement of the St Cuthberts Community, the Lindisfarne Monks, and consecration by Bishop Ecgfred around 831 to 847.
Through times of peace the Church provided the calm and security to worship, whilst through border battles and Reiver skirmishes the Church and its defensive tower offered refuge and protection.
The Church’s location near the Castle has involved it in conflicts and raids spanning the centuries, but it is now a place of peace, a place to take time, to rest a while and absorb it’s depth of calm, solidity, soul and beauty and for those that wish, a space to pray.
