About Us

The Church of St Bartholomew sits proudly overlooking the Village and the beautiful Vale in which it is nestled. It watches over the River Aln at its ’ Twyforde’ confluence where it is thought that the Synod assembly naming Cuthbert as Bishop of Lindisfarne was held in 684AD.

A snapshot in the life of St Bartholomew’s today would show an open, welcoming church, with regular services held fortnightly; the Servery open every Thursday for refreshments and chat, ‘Toddly Play’ worship sessions for early years children and their parents; lively school services where not a seat is spare; and quiet communions with peace to pray and rest a while. There are weddings and baptisms in this historic church, and our peaceful graveyard offers a final resting place to those that call the Vale their home. Our dedicated children’s space ensures a warm welcome for people of all ages. The local Scouts use the extensive grounds of the church for their activities and the grounds also offer valuable wildlife habitat to fauna and flora that write their own story for us to uncover.

As the vicar of Whittingham parish, which includes Edlingham and Bolton Chapel, as well as Felton and Longframlington parishes, it’s my role to join the dots of history and community to the power and presence of God in our midst today. We aspire to be a community of faith where we sow the seeds of the gospel and bring people of all ages to baptism; we enable faith to nurture and grow through discipleship and fellowship, and we go out to share our faith and gifts beyond the boundaries of the church. Whoever you are, wherever you’ve been, and wherever you’re going, you are welcome here. Whether you are seeking a spiritual home, a place to ask deep questions, or a community to call family, we invite you to journey with us.

Worship is at the heart of our life as the people of God in Whittingham. At the centre of all that we do and are, is the Eucharist, also called the Mass or Holy Communion. Jesus instructed his disciples to celebrate this meal in remembrance of Him and we seek to do this week by week. In the Eucharist we encounter Christ and the transforming power of His love.

8.30am Holy Communion on the Second Sunday of each month: This service with a short homily follows the pattern of the Book of Common Prayer.

10.00am Parish Eucharist on the Second and Fourth Sundays: This is our principal gathering and includes a sermon, music and refreshments after the service.  We hear readings from Scripture and share Holy Communion together. All welcome.

Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals

Every year, St Bartholomew’s welcomes families who would like to have their children baptised (Christened) or a Service of Thanksgiving for the Gift of a Child for them.

We also welcome many couples who would like to be married in the church, receive a blessing upon their marriage, or renew their vows with us.

Anyone who lives in or is connected with the parish may be entitled to have their funeral service in Church prior to burial or cremation. A Church of England funeral service can be made as personal and unique as you wish. The service usually follows a general structure, with the order of service including organ music, hymns/songs, readings, and prayers. In addition, the service may include a eulogy written and delivered by a family member or close friend. Special requests such as the deceased’s favourite music and flowers are customary at Christian funerals.

For information and bookings for baptisms, weddings and funerals in any of our three churches, please contact the Churchwarden.
