We are delighted to announce that Bishop Jonathan has appointed Rev Ian as an Honorary Canon of Portsmouth Cathedral. There are two types of Canons in the Church: Residential Canons who are stipendiary staff at a cathedral, and Honorary Canons who are not paid, but have a stall in the cathedral and take part in its life, preaching there once or twice a year. At Portsmouth Cathedral there are 3 Residential and 12 Honorary Canons. An honorary canon is a title of distinction, for those who are not actively involved in the daily duties of a cathedral but are recognised for their contributions to the life and mission of St Mary's Church, Fareham Deanery, Portsmouth Cathedral and the diocese. In addition to being our Vicar, he is Priest-in-Charge of St Peter’s Church Titchfield, and is a RNR Chaplain to Portsmouth’s Sea Cadet Corps at HMS Excellent, Whale Island. This does not mean Rev Ian is leaving St Mary's. His installation will take place at a service of Choral Evensong on Sunday 21st September."Heavenly Father, we thank you for Rev Ian and the dedication he has shown in his ministry as vicar. As he now takes on the additional honor and responsibility of becoming a canon, we ask for your continued blessing upon him. Guide him in his new responsibilities, grant him wisdom and discernment, and may his service be a source of inspiration and growth for our church community. Amen"
